The ignition parts and system used on Stihl equipment is similar to ignition systems on other makes of outdoor power equipment. The older Stihl models used a breaker points and condenser ignition system with a separate ignition coil. Newer Stihl models use a solid state ignition coil without breaker points or a condenser. The newer ignition coil is often referred to as an ignition module. The spark plug wire, terminal and boot are an attached part on both the older style coil and newer ignition module. NGK spark plugs are OEM for almost all Stihl models.
The flywheel on Stihl equipment is similar in construction to the flywheel on other brands. They are a cast magnesium flywheel with inserted magnets.
