The muffler on your Stihl chainsaw, cut off saw, trimmer or other equipment plays a number of important roles. First and most obvious is the reduction of sound from the engine. Second is to capture the extremely hot gases released through the cylinder exhaust port after combustion. These gases can not only cause serious burns, they can also start fires if exposed to saw dust or other combustibles. For this reason a seriously rusted or damaged muffler on any Stihl equipment should always be replaced. The third important role is in engine performance.
The muffler provides back pressure to the engine exhaust and as a result greatly affects performance by controlling the flow rate of exhaust gases. A common modification performed on Stihl chainsaws is called muffler porting. This involves drilling a hole, or holes, into the muffler to increase the exhaust gas flow rate. By some estimates modifying a Stihl chainsaw through muffler porting can increase power up to 20% however muffler porting can also reduce power if performed improperly. One rule of thumb suggests that the total hole size added to the muffler should never be greater than 80% of the size of the exhaust hole in the cylinder head. A spark arresting screen should also be fastened over to new hole because porting affects the mufflers ability to catch any pieces of hot carbon released through the exhaust. One common procedure is to weld a short length of pipe over the drilled hole in the muffler and than attach the screen to end of the pipe. The addition of the pipe also allows for further control of exhaust gas direction by placing a curve in the pipe. Before modifying a Stihl chainsaw by muffler porting one should also consider that this can void the manufacturer’s warranty.
