The piston in a Stihl blower, chainsaw, cutter, trimmer or other equipment is made from aluminum. To function properly the piston must be machined with a high level of accuracy and precision. This is especially important for obtaining the proper clearances between the piston and cylinder bore. The operating temperatures within the engine causes the piston to expand, and can result in engine seizure if the piston is machined too large. When replacing a worn or damaged piston in Stihl equipment, it is important to carefully inspect the cylinder before deciding to replace only the piston or both the piston and cylinder.

Careful consideration should be given to replacing a Stihl piston with the correct part number. In some Stihl model numbers there are multiple piston sizes and displacements available. An example is the Stihl 034 model chainsaw which uses a 46mm diameter piston and cylinder bore for the standard models but uses a 48mm diameter piston and cylinder for the 034 Super model. This 48mm piston and cylinder is also the same as is used in the Stihl 036 and MS360 chainsaw models.

If the piston does not include the piston rings, careful consideration should also be given to matching the proper size rings to the piston. In some cases there are Stihl pistons that use rings with a thickness of 1.2mm while another Stihl piston with the same diameter uses rings with a thickness of 1.5mm.
